Road Trip to Montenegro

We had to get up and going around 7 in order to pick up our rental car at 8. After our experience with the mosquitoes, we were less than thrilled to see that we would be joined by a colony of ants on our car ride. There were hundreds of them on the back bumper when they pulled our car up. They took it back and we thought maybe they were going to bring us a different car, but no they just washed the ants off the bumper and told us the ants wouldn’t hurt us. Our objections were ignored and they shooed us on our way.

After a short drive we entered Montenegro. We took a back road with a smaller border crossing so luckily there was no wait. We drove the Bay of Kotor, which is supposed to be a picturesque drive but the traffic and constant construction took away from some of the natural beauty.

Our first stop along the drive was at a small town called Perast. We took a short boat ride to the our lady of the rocks island

After the boat tour we walked along the short promenade and decided to stop for lunch at nice waterfront cafe.

Back on the bay of Kotor drive we passed the old town of Kotor (where we would be staying for the night) and instead decided to drive up a mountain pass to get views of the town and fjord from above. The road quickly turned narrow and after awhile we decided that the views from where we were at would do just fine and we decided to turn around and begin our descent.

Since we were once again staying in the old town part of the city, that meant no cars were allowed. Luckily since we were just staying one night we didn’t have to carry all of our luggage with us this time!

Our hotel, Hotel Cattaro, was situated right on the main square and the view from our balcony made for some great people watching. Unfortunately there was no shade though and it was hot! So we decided to find a covered cafe to have a beverage and people watch instead.

The rest of the day was spent exploring the tiny, charming town of Kotor, which is home to apparently 4 million cats…or at least it felt like it!

For dinner we had a sausage pizza - the sausage was more like a hot dog flavor/texture, which was kind of weird. But it was cheap, fast, and filling so it worked!

As we strolled back to our hotel for the evening we stopped for some gelato and then watched the town for a bit from our balcony before calling it a night.
